Fat Freezing Aftercare Guide
BTI’s clinical aftercare guide, in plain English
This guide reflects BTI’s standard aftercare advice for CoolTech fat freezing clients and is general in nature. It is not a substitute for individual medical advice. If anything about your recovery worries you, contact our clinical team or your GP.

Booked in for fat freezing, or just had your first session? The week or two after treatment is when most people start Googling things like “do and don’ts after fat freezing” or “why is my belly bigger after fat freezing”, because nobody really explains what actually happens to your body once the appointment is over.
This is the same guide we give our own clients, with the clinical detail kept in rather than smoothed over, so you know exactly what is normal, what needs attention, and what genuinely speeds up your results.
What should I expect in the days after fat freezing?
Fat freezing is a controlled injury, so a recovery response is expected, not a bad sign. In the first few days, the treated area, most often the tummy, can feel achy, tender or bloated, almost like a bruise you cannot quite see yet.
Swelling and tenderness typically settle within 3 to 10 days, though bruising in the area can occasionally take up to two weeks to fully fade. You will likely notice some numbness too, since the cold temporarily disconnects the nerve endings in that area. That is the same safe mechanism behind treatments like Botox, and full sensation returns 100 percent of the time, even though it can take up to two months.

Why does my stomach look bigger or more bloated after fat freezing?
This is one of the most searched questions after treatment, and it has a simple explanation: edema.
The treated area retains fluid as part of its normal healing response, which can make it look and feel puffier rather than flatter in the first week or two.
Loose, comfortable clothing helps more than you would think, a tight waistband digging into a healing area extends the discomfort the same way a sock does on a sprained ankle compared to a proper bandage.
Compression garments like Spanx-style shapewear in the first 3 to 5 days can ease this by giving the area even, gentle support.
Is nerve pain after fat freezing normal, and what actually helps?
For most people, no nerve symptoms appear at all beyond mild tingling.
But around 1 in 10 clients do experience nerve sensitivity, and it only happens in the tummy area.
It tends to start on day 3 or 4 as an intermittent sharp cramp or shooting sensation, and if it is going to happen, treating it early within the first 48 hours generally settles it faster than waiting it out.
A simple way to check what you are dealing with: Panadol will not touch nerve pain, so if it does not help, that is a sign it is nerve-related rather than general soreness. Avoid anti-inflammatories like Nurofen here specifically, since the inflammation is doing the job of clearing the dead fat cells.
Nervoderm patches (available at Chemist Warehouse) and Percutane cream are the two over-the-counter options BTI clients use most, alongside firm direct pressure on the area with your hand or a pillow.
Ice and heat both help some people and do nothing for others, it is worth trying both. In the rare case symptoms feel more intense, this is something to raise with your GP, who may discuss prescription options with you.
Whatever happens, there is no permanent harm, and a full recovery always follows within 5 to 10 days of symptoms starting.
What should I avoid after fat freezing?
A few things genuinely work against your results. Skip anti-inflammatory medication like Nurofen in the treated area for the reason above, your body needs that inflammation to do its job.
Avoid tight waistbands or restrictive clothing over the area for the first week. Go easy on alcohol, since it slows down the lymphatic function you are relying on to clear the treated fat cells.
Caffeine is not something BTI specifically restricts, but the same logic applies, anything that works against hydration is working against your results, so balance your coffee with extra water rather than cutting it out altogether.
How does the lymphatic system actually clear away the fat after freezing?
Once the cold has done its job, the fat cells in the treated area crystallise and die off through a natural process called apoptosis, essentially programmed cell death.
Your immune system then sends in macrophages, a type of white blood cell, to break down and digest those dead fat cells. From there, the lymphatic system is what actually carries this cellular debris away from the treated area, moving it through your lymph nodes and eventually to the liver, where it is processed and excreted from the body the same way other natural waste is.
This is why a sluggish or congested lymphatic system, more than how many fat cells were affected by the treatment, tends to be the biggest factor in how quickly someone sees their results. It is not a sign anything has gone wrong, some people’s lymphatic systems simply move more efficiently than others. If your lymphatic flow is already working well, you will generally notice the difference sooner.
Does combining fat freezing with skin tightening speed up results?
It can, which is why we recommend it rather than treating the two as unrelated treatments. Booking a skin tightening session shortly after your fat freezing appointment uses targeted energy to gently warm the treated area, which increases local circulation and stimulates lymphatic flow exactly where you need it most.
This does not change what the fat freezing itself achieved, but it can help your body process and clear the treated fat cells more efficiently, while also supporting the skin retraction that keeps the area looking firm rather than loose as the fat reduces.
If you are already booked in for fat freezing, ask your clinician about timing a skin tightening session shortly afterwards, it is one of the simplest ways to get more out of the same recovery window.

What actually speeds up fat freezing results?
Hydration and lymphatic movement make the biggest difference day to day. Unlike your blood, which has your heart to keep it moving, lymph fluid only moves when your body does, so drinking plenty of water and staying active both support the process described above directly.
BTI also recommends vibration plate therapy, 10 to 15 minutes daily, since the vibration stimulates lymphatic drainage more effectively than exercise alone for a lot of people. A decent home unit makes this an easy daily habit rather than a chore.

Can I massage or use oil on the treated area afterwards?
Yes, and it is worth doing. Once the first week has passed and tenderness has settled, a gentle massage with rosehip, argan or coconut oil after showering helps stimulate circulation and supports the skin’s natural tightening response in the treated area, since the procedure itself causes a small amount of micro-injury that triggers a healing reaction in the skin.
A few minutes of gentle circular massage, continued for at least three months, gets the most out of this effect.
Can I exercise after fat freezing?
Yes, and it actually helps. Light exercise in the days after treatment, and 15 to 20 minutes of cardio like walking, swimming or light cycling once you are comfortable, supports the elimination process and can help you see changes sooner.
Consistency matters more than intensity here, you do not need to push hard, you just need to keep moving regularly.
How long does it take to see results, and when are they final?
The treated fat cells are fully dead within about 4 days of your session, but the timeline after that depends on how quickly your body clears them. If you have a fast metabolism or heal quickly, you might notice changes as early as 2 weeks.
For most people, the general timeline is 6 to 8 weeks, and results can continue improving up to the 3-month mark, which is when your body should have fully eliminated the treated cells.
Some clients notice a gradual shift, others say it felt like the change appeared overnight when they caught their reflection in the shower one day.
Will my results look the same as someone else’s?
Not exactly, and that is completely normal. Fat freezing works with your body’s own healing and lymphatic processes, which means your results will always be individual to you, the same way two people doing the same weight training program will build muscle and lose fat at different rates depending on their starting point, consistency, hydration, sleep and genetics.
Some clients see a noticeable change at the six week mark, others need the full three months before it is obvious, and a few will get more out of a second session on a stubborn area than others will. None of that means the treatment has not worked, it just means your body is doing this at its own pace.

What do BTI clients say about their fat freezing recovery?
Hearing how the process actually felt for someone else can take a lot of the guesswork out of your own recovery.
“For years, I’ve struggled with stubborn areas on my lower tummy and inner thighs that just wouldn’t budge, even when I was at my goal weight. Surgery was something I dreamed of for a long time but felt was financially out of reach. Deciding to finally do this was a huge investment in myself. From the moment I arrived, the lovely team of ladies made me feel completely at ease and confident that I was in capable hands. Seven weeks in, I’m already feeling so much more comfortable in my skin and certain that I’ll achieve the best possible outcome.”
Jenny H
“I had the cool tech fat freezing for my saggy baggy tuck shop lady arms. After 1 treatment I started to notice a definite reduction and improvement in the look. With some weight bearing exercises they are still improving.”
When should I contact BTI after treatment?
Reach out straight away if nerve sensitivity starts, if swelling seems to be increasing rather than settling after day 5, or if anything about your recovery does not feel right, we would always rather hear from you early.
We also recommend booking your post-treatment follow-up appointment for around the 8 to 12 week mark, this is when your results are fully visible and the right time to assess whether you need another session or you are happy with where you have landed.
And at any point along the way, before that follow-up or well after it, if you have any questions at all about how your recovery is going, contact our team. We would always rather you ask than wonder.
Quick FAQ
Is the numbness permanent?
No. It can last up to two months, but full recovery happens every time.
Can I have more treatments?
Yes, many clients build a plan around multiple sessions. This is something to discuss from around the six week mark once your first results are showing.
What if I don’t see results?
Talk to us. Lymphatic function and individual healing both play a role, and there is usually a way to optimise your plan rather than assume the treatment did not work.
What should I do before my appointment?
Stay hydrated, wear comfortable clothing you can move in, and eat a light meal beforehand. Your clinician will run through anything specific for your treatment area at your consultation.
