Red Light Therapy Benefits: What It Actually Does for Your Skin

TLDR Summary:

Red Light Therapy uses red and near-infrared wavelengths to stimulate collagen production, calm inflammation and support muscle recovery.

It’s one of the few skin treatments backed by genuine safety research, and it pairs naturally with HOCATT™ and PEMF, which is why it’s the free bonus in our current wellness bundle.

What Red Light Therapy actually does

Red Light Therapy uses specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light, typically somewhere in the 600 to 1100 nanometre range, to stimulate your cells’ mitochondria, the part of the cell responsible for energy production.

This process is called photobiomodulation, and it’s one of the more heavily researched non-invasive skin technologies available.

At a skin level, red light prompts your fibroblasts, the cells responsible for collagen, to become more active. Research examining the transcriptional response of skin cells to red light phototherapy found it increases expression of a gene involved in remodelling collagen within the skin, part of how it supports firmer, more even-looking skin over time.

If your skin has felt flat or dull lately, this is why

If you’ve read our article on Why Your Skin Looks Duller in Winter, and How to Turn It Around, you’ll know that cooler months slow circulation to the skin, which shows up as dullness, dryness and a general lack of glow.

Red Light Therapy directly counters that by boosting circulation and cellular energy at the surface, which is exactly why we treat it as a cooler-months skin treatment rather than a summer-only add-on.

If you want the fuller picture on what’s actually involved in skin rejuvenation more broadly, peels, needling and light-based treatments, and where each one fits, that’s covered in Skin Rejuvenation Explained: What It Does, What Works, and What to Expect.

It’s not just skin, it supports recovery too

Red Light Therapy’s other major use case is muscle recovery. A review of red light therapy in athletes found photobiomodulation supports regeneration by stimulating mitochondria, increasing ATP production and reducing inflammation, with athletes reporting improved strength, less soreness and faster recovery between sessions.

This is part of why Red Light Therapy fits naturally alongside HOCATT™ and PEMF rather than as a stand-alone treatment. HOCATT™ supports detox and circulation, PEMF supports cellular repair and pain relief, and Red Light Therapy supports the visible, outward side of that same recovery process, your skin and your muscles.

Is it actually safe?

One of the more reassuring things about Red Light Therapy is how thoroughly its safety has been studied, including specifically for aesthetic skin use.

A systematic review published in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal looked at the oncologic safety of low-level light therapy for skin rejuvenation and found no evidence linking it to malignancy risk, concluding it’s oncologically safe for skin rejuvenation, including for people previously treated for cancer. It’s also completely non-invasive, with zero downtime.

Why it’s the free bonus in our current bundle

Red Light Therapy doesn’t duplicate what HOCATT™ and PEMF already do, it rounds them out. That’s why, rather than charging separately for it, we’ve included 10 sessions, valued at $750, as a bonus across the HOCATT™ 10-Session Wellness Bundle. Most clients simply add it onto the end of a HOCATT™ or PEMF appointment, so it costs you no extra time out of your day.

FAQ

Does Red Light Therapy have any downtime?

No. It’s non-invasive with zero downtime, and is usually added onto another treatment session.

How many sessions will I need?

Like HOCATT™ and PEMF, it works best as a course, which is why it’s included as 10 sessions in the current bundle.

Is Red Light Therapy safe?

Yes, current research supports its safety for skin use, including in people previously treated for cancer. If you’re pregnant or on photosensitising medication, mention this at your consultation.

Where can I access Red Light Therapy on the Sunshine Coast?
